  • Location: Yokohama, Japan
  • Investment: $350M
  • Capabilities: Mammalian, cell therapy, mRNA
  • Next steps: GMP-ready 2027

What happened?

AGC Biologics announced a $350 million investment for a new four-story, 20,000 m² manufacturing facility at AGC Inc.’s Yokohama Technical Center, expanding its CDMO services in Japan. The site will support preclinical through commercial production for mammalian biologics, cell therapies and mRNA products.

Why does it matter?

Asia-Pacific demand for biologics manufacturing is surging, with Japan seeking domestic capacity to reduce overseas reliance. The Yokohama site — featuring Japan’s largest single-use bioreactors (2x 5,000L Thermo Scientific vessels) — bolsters AGC’s regional footprint alongside its Chiba facility, enhancing global supply chain resilience and serving innovators needing flexible, high-capacity production.

Who’s behind it?

Seattle-based AGC Biologics, a CDMO with sites across Europe, North America and Asia, leverages AGC Inc.’s Yokohama Technical Center. Supported by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) under vaccine production initiatives, CEO Patricio Massera emphasised serving Asia-Pacific demand with end-to-end services.

How was it achieved?

The facility includes multiple 2,000–5,000L+ single-use bioreactors, dual-use vaccine capabilities, two in vitro transcription (IVT)/LNP lines for mRNA up to 50g scale, and cell therapy suites for iPSC, MSC, HSC and CAR-T. Builds on Yokohama’s ongoing cell therapy PD/clinical ops since July 2025 and Milan CoE expertise.

What’s next?

Construction advances toward GMP readiness in 2027, with ~400 jobs created. Will optimise AGC’s network efficiencies, including Chiba microbial/mammalian ops, for Japan/Asia innovators and global clients seeking regional capacity.

What are people saying?

Patricio Massera, CEO: “Increased demand… for high-quality partners… strengthen our global CDMO network.” Christoph Winterhalter, CBO: “One of the most advanced sites in Japan for large-scale manufacturing.”
