  • Company: Cambrex
  • Location: Charles City, Iowa, US
  • Investment: Part of $120M US API capacity expansion
  • Focus area: Large‑scale small‑molecule and peptide APIs, incl. HPAPIs and controlled substances
  • Next steps: Groundbreaking in late 2026; +20% large‑scale capacity at site

What happened?

Cambrex said it has completed initial engineering studies for a new large‑scale active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufacturing plant at its Charles City, Iowa site. The project is a key milestone within the company’s previously announced 120 million USD investment to expand US API manufacturing and strengthen domestic drug‑supply resilience.

Why does it matter?

The Charles City expansion will add around 140,000 litres of new capacity, including large‑ and mid‑scale reactors and advanced Hastelloy agitated filter dryers, increasing the site’s large‑scale capacity by about 20% once this phase is complete. It supports rising demand for US‑based CDMO capacity in complex small molecules, peptide therapeutics, highly potent APIs and controlled substances, amid ongoing reshoring and supply‑chain security initiatives.

Who’s behind it?

Cambrex is a global CDMO focused on small‑molecule APIs and drug products, with Charles City already one of the largest independent API facilities in the US. The Iowa site, on a 45‑acre campus, manufactures a broad range of intermediates and APIs and has seen multiple prior expansions, including a 50 million USD capacity boost completed in 2022.

How was it achieved?

Following completion of the initial engineering phase, Cambrex has defined the process‑equipment mix and integration plan for the new plant, including additional reactors and upgraded manufacturing suites to handle complex chemistry and HPAPI containment. The new unit slots into the broader 40% capacity‑increase programme at Charles City, which will ultimately bring total large‑scale capacity to nearly one million litres.

What’s next?

Groundbreaking for the new API plant is scheduled for late 2026, with construction and commissioning to follow as part of Cambrex’s multi‑year US and European expansion plan. Once online, the facility is expected to provide additional commercial‑scale slots for innovator and generic clients, supporting projects from late development through launch and long‑term supply.
