What happened?
Isomorphic Labs, the Alphabet-backed AI drug discovery company, raised $2.1 billion in a Series B round led again by Thrive Capital. The London-based company said the new funding will support its artificial-intelligence drug design pipeline across multiple therapeutic areas.
Why does it matter?
The financing is one of the largest private raises in AI drug discovery and gives Isomorphic Labs far more capital to push its platform beyond research into therapeutic development. It also signals continued investor confidence in AI-led drug design, even though the company has not yet dosed a human patient with an Isomorphic-designed compound.
Who’s behind it?
Isomorphic Labs was spun out of Google DeepMind in 2021 and is led by Demis Hassabis, who also heads Google’s AI division. The round included Alphabet, GV, CapitalG, MGX, Temasek and the UK Sovereign AI Fund, alongside Thrive Capital.
How was it achieved?
The company’s platform builds on AlphaFold, the protein-structure prediction technology that helped make Isomorphic a central name in AI drug design. Isomorphic says the capital will fund further development of its drug design engine, expand its team and accelerate internal programmes in oncology, immunology and cardiovascular disease.
What’s next?
Isomorphic plans to scale its technology, broaden hiring across London, Cambridge, Massachusetts and Lausanne, and move its internal pipeline closer to the clinic. The company also has partnerships with Eli Lilly and Novartis, which may help validate and support its commercial progress.
