  • Company: Merck & Co.; Infinimmune
  • Location: US (Merck); biotech-stage (Infinimmune)
  • Deal value: Up to $838M in milestones plus royalties
  • Focus area: Novel antibody discovery and development
  • Next steps: Joint target selection; antibody discovery campaigns; IND filing

What happened?

Merck has entered a collaboration agreement with Infinimmune, an antibody-focused biotech, in a deal worth up to $838 million in biobucks. The partnership gives Merck access to Infinimmune’s proprietary antigen-hunting and antibody discovery platform to identify and develop novel therapeutic antibodies across undisclosed disease areas.

Why does it matter?

Antibody therapeutics remain one of the most productive modalities in drug development, and access to differentiated discovery platforms can yield best-in-class binding profiles against hard-to-drug or previously inaccessible targets. For Merck, the deal extends a busy March of targeted business development, adding upstream discovery firepower to complement its late-stage pipeline acquisitions including Terns and Quotient.

Who’s behind it?

Infinimmune specialises in a systematic approach to antibody discovery, combining high-throughput antigen identification with deep immunological profiling to surface novel binding candidates. Merck, already a leader in antibody-based medicine through Keytruda and its broader oncology and immunology portfolio, is using the collaboration to stay ahead of the next generation of therapeutic antibody targets.

How was it achieved?

The collaboration is structured around research milestones and downstream development, regulatory and commercial payments, a common structure for platform-based antibody deals. Infinimmune will likely lead early discovery work, with Merck taking development responsibility as candidates progress. Royalties on eventual sales are also included in the deal structure.

What’s next?

The partners will jointly identify target programmes and initiate antibody discovery campaigns, with the aim of advancing candidates into IND-enabling studies and eventual clinical trials. Success across even one or two programmes could generate substantial milestone payments, validating Infinimmune’s platform and potentially leading to an expanded collaboration or acquisition.
